It was a night like most nights in this city. Rain came down like it wanted to block out the rising sun, but it couldn’t block out the satisfaction I felt at that moment. I had just wrapped up the Tri-Angle case, toughest case I ever cracked, and now I was just chillin’, felt like I was healin’. Then she walked through my door.
Her thin scarf floated around her like a purple line around an attractive group of Korean singers, and the way she looked at me told me she wasn’t here to be serenaded. “Is this where I can hire a search dog? I got a missing artifact needs finding.”
I wasn’t interested in barking for this broad, so I let ‘er off easy. “Sorry babe, you got the wrong number. I ain’t a hound for hire. But if you like I can sing you a couple songs before you go.”
She wasn’t gonna be let off that easy. “I don’t intend for this visit to be a total waste,” she amended as she stepped out of the shadows like a house rat sneaking out for some food. Only I got a sinking feeling that I was the mouse in this situation and she was an alley cat. Turns out that scarf of hers was the main garment in her ensemble, and the look in her eyes clearly said, “I’ve got you under my skin.” Woof.
As she sauntered over to my desk, all I could tell myself was, “Keep your head down.”
